I just had a solid wrongbike weekend. Saturday one of my old CEOs came to town. I lent him my Motobecane for an out and and back to the Conzelman Summit. This left me with my single speed. Man I love climbing on that thing.

Sunday one of my cross buddies thought taking the road bikes out would be a good idea. This translated to a pretty fun loop that involved a ton of climbing on steep trails. I definitely missed having mountain gearing and tires wider then 25s. The trails around Palo Alto Foothills Park are great, if you can find them:

2011 Tour de Cupcake was a blast. Right after receiving the waypoints we all realized the ride would not be a cake walk. Emily went into action and started marking up the map. Nio and Denyse started strategizing on which streets we would attack the or avoid the hills. I’m pretty sure Liam and I where already dreaming of Beer at the finish.

All hail the Strada

The course contained an ashtonding 7 waypoint stops and 5 cupcake stops and 19 to 26 miles. And make note it was hilly sf city miles, not the easy peasy country miles. I’m happy to report despite the distance, contending with Fleet Week and Columbus Parade Celebrations the core team WRONGBIKE made all the checkpoints and cupcake stops.

At times, the wrongbike crew joined forces with the East Bay Group and the CYLRAB crew. It was a blast caravaning and consuming cupcakes the other teams. After we all finished it was time for beer and recaps about how all the unexpected events. Most of all we appreciated each others perseverance and spirit of adventure.

WRONGBIKE Weekend

This last weekend I started Saturday morning with a cyclocross race. My first official race with numbers and all. I finished pretty low, but I finished without crashing or gear failure, which for me was an astounding success.

After that I headed to Point Reyes for some backpacking, since I had to haul an extra tent I decided to use my Burley Travoy. It’s a great urban trailer, but once the trail thins the whole setup becomes nearly useless. I was tipping all over the place. Guess I need to start shopping for a third trailer.

But hey what’s a camping trip without some kind of epic. Coffee well earned, I can’t wait for another weekend like this.

For the DFL cross series cross dressers get to race free and the cheap bastard in me needed couldn’t pass up the $5 savings. Here I am, as dolled up as you are ever likely to see me:

Now that the DLF cross season is over it’s on to the regular cyclocross season. Next Race, Lion of Fairfax this weekend.

Spare the Air 9/28: How about trying Butterlap

Tomorrow is a Spare the Air day. It just so happens its also Butterlap day. So how about riding your bike to work and joining me on a Butterlap this Wednesday?

Quick FAQ:
Where is Butterlap?
Starts at the Ferry Building ends up at Benders. Many people will just ride to the panhandle and head home. For me it’s a 19 mile ride door to door.

When is Butterlap?
Every Wednesday at 7pm, really we don’t leave until 7:15.

How fast do is the ride?
It’s a fast social ride. Generally there will be a few different groups pacing anywhere from 9-14 miles an hour. Everyone is welcome fast or slow. Butterlap also stops at 5 different places allowing everyone to regroup.

Booze?
Yes, bring some have some fun and share.

What to wear?
Street close you can ride 19 miles in.

Apparently high end hotels have decided that crazy bike scene isn’t just for dumpster diving bicycle clubs anymore.
Yep it’s pretty and I have a real desire to see a youtube post of a hard turn at 30mph on it.

DNF on the DFL Outlaw

Last night I finally did my first cyclocross race. Towards the end of the second lap I crashed and blew the tire off my rim. Dust and failure, a great start to my cyclocross career. I’m already looking to get back at it.
